This tapestry is based upon the many paintings of ballerinas by Edgar Degas
(1834-1917)
Obsessed by the ballet, Edgar Degas created hundreds of paintings and sculptures which captured the harsh realities of 19th-century dancers’ lives and hinged on his voyeuristic fascination with the pain ballet inflicted on female bodies.
He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of dance, and over half his works depict dancers.
