This is a tapestry representation of the Chat Noir (Black Cat) poster by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 - 1923).
Steinlen is perhaps best known for his wonderful commercial posters depicting Parisian life. Often compared with the posters of his friend and fellow illustrator Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen's works are personal, simplistic and intimate. These colorful lithograph posters provided an inexpensive means of advertising for the influx of mass produced goods entering the market place, as well as adverting the popular cabaret and theatrical stars of the period.
Steinlen became immersed in the avant-garde world of the Chat Noir Café after moving to Paris’ bohemian Montmartre section. In Paris, he created over 400 Art Nouveau illustrations for local magazines, as well as advertisements and stylized nightclub posters, which often featured the cats that he loved.
